Yenidtse Factory in Dresden
Yenidze
Approaching the center of Dresden with the West, it is impossible not to notice the most unusual building in the city - Yenidtse. This is an amazing building, the dome rises to 62 meters high, its architectural design resembles a mosque. "Such a large mosque in the center of Dresden, a conservative? Do not be! "- Goes through my head at first. Upon closer examination on the drum of the dome is seen a strange word «Yenidze».Synagogue? There is none.
Yenidtse - a former tobacco factory, built in 1909 on the initiative of industrialist Hugo Tsittsa and bizarre name of the plant received by the town name in Greece, where the businessman took out tobacco. Construction of a factory in a mosque once pursued two goals:
Second, the unusual appearance of the building was an excellent advertisement for a tobacco factory Hugo Tsittsa. And the marketing ploy was so successful that the products industrialist soon became popular far beyond the state of Saxony. By the way, in the early XX century, it is in Yenidtse under various brands produced more than 60% of the German tobacco products.
The prototype for the fabulously beautiful building of the factory was one of the mosques in Cairo, which captured the imagination of Tsittsa while traveling in Egypt. The main architect of the project was selected Hammich Herman Martin, who not only was able to harmoniously combine the ornate Moorish-style luxury and sophistication of European modernism, but also designed the building with modern engineering. Hammich first in Germany, used as a load-bearing structure of reinforced concrete slabs.
To finish the building was used a great oriental ceramic tiles and mosaics, and a monumental 20-meter dome was made of colored glass, so at night resembles a giant glowing Yenidtse inside a Christmas toy.
However, the townspeople were not able to appreciate the creative genius of the architect, accepting the construction of "mosque" in arms, and the Hammich for this project was expelled from the Union of Architects of Saxony.
The factory shop located in Yenidtse until 1953, then there was the central office of the GDR tobacco, and after reconstruction in 1996, "tobacco mosque" has become a business center, under the dome of which is a restaurant in the basement - the club.Today, everyone can enjoy not only delicious food served in Yenidtse, but also an amazing view from its observation deck of the old town.
Location: Germany, Dresden, Weißeritzstraße 3.
